I did not set out to become an author, it happened by happy accident.
My grandchildren live many hours drive away, and I don’t see them often, so I started to record YouTube videos of me reading stories for them using eBooks. After a while I began to realize that it was hard to find books with the kind of stories I wanted to read. So I wrote a poem, and hired an illustrator and created an eBook to use in my YouTube video. I wrote a few more and began turning them into softback books, and eventually my first hardback.
When you become a grandparent there’s a natural urge to build a legacy, to share your history with your descendents. And this is especially true of immigrants - you want your grandchildren to know where they came from. Out of this was born the poem “Walking with Dad”.
I don’t really have many “special” memories of my Mom or Dad - just lots of little ones. The poem tries to capture the beauty of little, ordinary moments even when little is said. It’s about ordinary things parents do with their children spending precious time together. Andrew Abel, March 2023
